Excerpt from upcoming short story (Critical Thinkers)

Three minutes left.

This is the moment she has been waiting for, the biggest speech she has to ever give.

To the most important crowd of people… her family.

They were waiting for her in the living room.

How could she tell her parents that she had joined the Masked Rebels?

A group of liberals her parents called, “the downfall of this country.”

Her desire to avenge her biological mother’s death was her only drive.

Her adoptive parents have been more than just parents, they have been her best friends.

Her father, a man who has given her everything her heart has ever desired.

Her mother, a woman who listens to her and loves her unconditionally.

The government had brainwashed them so intensely that she wasn’t sure if love was big enough to convince them joining the masked rebels was the only way.

In her head, she kept replaying in her mind the moment her biological mother was taken away from her at the age of five.

She held the only thing she had left of her mother. A necklace with her picture in it. She looked at her parents sitting on the couch and said, “I have to tell them. Its the only way I can keep them safe. Nothing they say will ever make me regret this decision.”
